Martín Erasto Torrijos Espino is a Panamanian politician who served as President of Panama from 2004 to 2009. He was the son of the Panamanian army leader Omar Torrijos. Martín Torrijos studied economics and political science in the United States. Then he returned to Panama, working in the Democratic Revolutionary Party. He was the party's presidential candidate in the 1999 general election, losing to party candidate Arnulfista Mireya Moscoso. In the 2004 presidential election, he ran for re-election as a candidate for PRD. This time his main opponent was Solidarity candidate Guillermo Endara, who was beaten by Torrijos at 47% to 31%. Torrijos reformed social security and pensions during his tenure, while proposing and approving a $ 5 billion renewal of the Panama Canal. Torrijos was replaced by supermarket tycoon Ricardo Martinelli in 2009. He is a member of the Inter-American Dialogue.
